SIZING

Don’t size a dehumidifier by square footage alone.

Two houses with the same floor area can have very different moisture loads. Building leakage, basement conditions, ventilation, occupancy, cooling operation and outdoor-air exposure all affect how much water may need to be removed.

AIR CONDITIONING VS. DEHUMIDIFICATION

Your air conditioner removes moisture — but humidity and temperature are not the same load.

Air conditioners remove moisture while cooling, but their primary control is typically based on temperature. A home can therefore reach the desired temperature before enough runtime has occurred to achieve the desired humidity.

WHY THIS MATTERS

A cold house can still be humid.

VENTILATION & HUMIDITY

Outdoor-air ventilation changes the moisture balance.

An HRV or ERV intentionally exchanges indoor and outdoor air. Whether that helps or adds to an indoor humidity load depends on the season and conditions, which is why ventilation and dehumidification should be considered together.

HRV

Heat recovery without intentional moisture transfer.

During warm, humid weather, incoming ventilation air can add moisture that the cooling or dehumidification system must manage.

ERV

Heat plus partial moisture transfer.

An ERV transfers a portion of moisture between outgoing and incoming airstreams, which can reduce—but does not eliminate—the incoming moisture load under suitable conditions.

What does a whole-home dehumidifier do?

A whole-home dehumidifier removes moisture from indoor air using a refrigeration process and drains the condensed water away. Drier processed air is then returned to the building through the designed air-distribution arrangement.

How do I know if I need a dehumidifier?

Start with reliable indoor relative-humidity measurements and determine when and where the problem occurs. Persistent elevated humidity, a damp basement or inadequate moisture removal from the cooling system can justify further investigation.

What indoor humidity should I maintain?

There is no single setting appropriate for every building and season. The target should consider comfort, condensation risk, outdoor conditions and the building. Persistent relative humidity above about 60% is generally a reason to investigate moisture control and sources.

Does my air conditioner already dehumidify?

Does an ERV replace a dehumidifier?
