EVERY LOAD

WATCH THE DRYER

Weak Exterior Discharge

Extra Humidity

Burning Odour

BEHIND THE DRYER
Don’t push the appliance back and crush the exhaust connection.
The short transition between the dryer and permanent exhaust is a common trouble spot. Tight laundry spaces can kink, flatten or disconnect the connection when the appliance is pushed toward the wall.
Check for
- Visible crushing or flattening.
- Sharp kinks or unnecessary loops.

EXTERIOR TERMINATION
Take a look outside while the dryer is running.
The dryer needs a clear path to outdoors. An exterior termination should be suitable for dryer exhaust, protected from weather and able to open freely while the appliance operates.
Damper Opens
Observe whether the exterior damper opens freely while the dryer is operating.
No Lint Blockage
Look for visible lint accumulation that is restricting the outlet or interfering with damper movement.
Avoid Lint-Trapping Screens
Screens can collect dryer lint and become a restriction. Dryer terminations should be specifically appropriate for dryer exhaust.
DO NOT CREATE AN ACCESS HAZARD
Only inspect what you can safely see from the ground or another normal access point.
Do not climb onto a roof or use an unsafe ladder simply to inspect a dryer termination. Roof and high-wall terminations may require professional assessment.
DUCT MATERIAL
The exhaust connection should not be an afterthought.

The permanent dryer exhaust and the transition connection should be appropriate for the appliance and installation, with the dryer’s manufacturer instructions guiding the configuration.
Permanent Exhaust
Concealed exhaust routing should use appropriate metal dryer-exhaust ductwork rather than improvised flexible material hidden inside walls or ceilings.
Transition Connection
The connection immediately behind the dryer should remain open, properly connected and resistant to crushing or kinking.
Manufacturer Instructions
Follow the dryer’s installation instructions for permitted materials, duct size, routing and maximum equivalent exhaust length.
KEEP THE LAUNDRY AREA CLEAN
Lint doesn’t only collect inside the vent.
Dust and lint can accumulate around and behind the appliance. Keep the dryer area reasonably clean and avoid storing unnecessary combustible clutter immediately around the machine.
Clean Around the Dryer
Vacuum accessible lint and dust around, beside and behind the appliance when it can be done safely.
Keep the Area Clear
Avoid allowing boxes, clothing and other clutter to accumulate against the dryer or block ventilation around the appliance.

GAS DRYERS
A gas dryer adds fuel-burning equipment to the laundry area.

If you smell gas, suspect a gas leak or have a concern with the appliance itself, stop using the equipment and follow the appropriate gas-safety procedure rather than treating it as a dryer-vent cleaning problem.

The dryer exhaust and the gas appliance both need to be safe and functional.
