What do we inspect on an HRV or ERV?
The exact procedure depends on the make, model, condition and accessibility of the unit, but the following areas are commonly reviewed.
Filters
Inspect accessible filters for dust and debris and clean washable filters where appropriate.
Heat-Recovery Core
Inspect the accessible core and clean it where the manufacturer permits and the service scope includes it.
Interior Cabinet

HEPA MAINTENANCE

CLEAN OR REPLACE?
Not every filter should be washed.

CLEANABLE
Washable filters & components
Some HRV or ERV pre-filters and heat-recovery components are designed to be vacuumed or washed. Cleaning methods should follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific equipment.
REPLACEABLE
HEPA & disposable media
Disposable HEPA media and other non-washable filters should not be washed simply because they look dirty. When replacement is required, the correct media should be installed.
HRV IS NOT HEPA
Ventilation and filtration do different jobs.
These systems can both contribute to indoor air quality, but they should not be confused with one another.
HRV / ERV
Brings in outdoor air and exhausts stale indoor air.
A heat or energy recovery ventilator exchanges indoor and outdoor air while transferring heat or energy between the two separated airstreams.
HEPA
Filters airborne particulate from the air passing through it.
A dedicated whole-home HEPA system recirculates or receives connected air through high-efficiency filter media.
WHEN SHOULD THEY BE CHECKED?
There is no single interval that applies to every installation.
Maintenance frequency depends on the equipment, filter type, manufacturer requirements and the conditions inside and outside the home.
Follow the Manufacturer
The equipment manual should be the primary source for filter-cleaning and replacement intervals.
Inspect More Often When Needed
Renovations, pets, smoke, high dust levels and heavy equipment use can increase loading.
Watch for Airflow Changes

MORE THAN FILTER CLEANING
Some problems require HVAC or ventilation service.
Filter cleaning is maintenance. It does not repair a malfunctioning HRV, ERV or HEPA system and it does not correct an improperly designed or installed ventilation system.
Motor or Fan Problems
A fan that does not operate properly requires diagnosis and repair rather than filter cleaning.
Control Problems
Wall controls, timers, sensors and related deficiencies require separate troubleshooting.
Airflow or Balancing
Poor ventilation can result from ductwork, balancing, installation or equipment issues.
Damaged Components
Damaged cores, motors, filters or other components may require repair or replacement.

Can HRV filters be washed?
Some HRV filters are washable, but the correct cleaning method depends on the equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific filter and unit.
Can a HEPA filter be washed?
Most conventional disposable whole-home HEPA media should not be washed. When the HEPA element reaches the end of its service life, the appropriate replacement media should be installed.
Can an HRV core be cleaned?
Many HRV heat-recovery cores are designed for periodic cleaning, but procedures vary by manufacturer. Components should only be cleaned using methods approved for that particular unit.
How often should HRV filters be cleaned?
Maintenance frequency depends on the equipment, filter type, operating conditions and manufacturer recommendations. Filters may need earlier attention where there is renovation dust, pets, smoke or other heavy loading.
Is an HRV the same as a HEPA filter?
No. An HRV or ERV is a mechanical ventilation system that exchanges indoor and outdoor air. A HEPA system is a high-efficiency filtration system designed to remove airborne particulate from the air passing through it.
Can HRV or HEPA maintenance be added to duct cleaning?
Yes. DAVESDUCTS currently offers simplified, accessible HRV and HEPA filter cleaning for $89 + HST when added to an air duct cleaning service. Replacement media, repairs and more involved maintenance are additional where required.
What if my HRV fan is not working?
A failed fan, motor, control or sensor requires troubleshooting and repair rather than routine filter cleaning.
Can DAVESDUCTS replace HEPA filter media?
Where suitable replacement media is available for the installed system, DAVESDUCTS can identify or supply applicable replacement filters as part of the service scope.
Does a dirty HEPA filter affect HVAC airflow?
Heavily loaded filtration can add resistance. The actual effect depends on the filtration system, duct arrangement and HVAC configuration, so filter condition should be considered together with the system it serves.
