TRX Series II

NTI’s current TRX Series II platform uses a water-tube heat exchanger and is offered in heat-only and combi configurations, depending on model.

FLOOR-STANDING

NTI Compass Series

A current high-efficiency floor-standing boiler option for projects where a floor-mounted configuration is appropriate.

BOILER OR COMBI?

Space heating only — or space heating plus domestic hot water?

The first equipment decision is what the appliance needs to do. A heat-only boiler serves the hydronic heating system, while a combi configuration can combine hydronic space heating and domestic-hot-water production in one appliance.

HEAT-ONLY BOILER

Hydronic Space Heating

A heat-only boiler can serve radiators, baseboards, radiant floors, hydronic air handlers and other properly designed hydronic emitters. Domestic hot water can be handled separately or through a compatible indirect-water-heater arrangement.

COMBI BOILER

Heating + Domestic Hot Water

A combi configuration can produce domestic hot water while also serving the hydronic heating system. Equipment selection must consider the building’s heating load and its domestic-hot-water demand as separate requirements.

PROPER BOILER DESIGN

A new NTI boiler should be designed around the system — not simply matched to the old nameplate.

Boiler replacement is an opportunity to evaluate whether the existing equipment was correctly sized and whether the piping, pumps, zoning and heat emitters support efficient operation of the new boiler.

LOAD

Building heating requirement.

Existing boilers can be oversized. Replacement equipment should be selected around the application rather than automatically duplicating the old input rating.

TEMPERATURE

Match the heat emitters.

Radiant floors, radiators, baseboards and hydronic coils can require different supply-water temperatures and flow conditions.

DISTRIBUTION

Pumps, piping & zoning.

The boiler must work with the circulators, valves, piping arrangement, controls and zones that distribute heat through the building.

An NTI fault code is a starting point — not the entire diagnosis.

When an NTI boiler locks out, loses heat or behaves intermittently, DAVESDUCTS evaluates the appliance and relevant hydronic-system conditions before recommending replacement parts or major equipment work.

Diagnosis can include ignition, combustion, controls, system pressure, thermostats, zoning, pumps and other conditions relevant to the complaint.

NTI Error Codes

Error history and current faults are useful diagnostic information, but the underlying operating condition should be verified before assuming a component has failed.

Pressure or Relief Problems

Expansion tanks, fill components, relief devices, system pressure and temperature can contribute to abnormal pressure or discharge.

Uneven Heating

If the boiler operates but some zones do not heat properly, the problem may involve circulation, zoning, controls, air, flow or the heat emitters rather than the boiler itself.

NTI BOILER INSTALLATION

The mechanical room should be assessed before the replacement boiler is selected.

A boiler project can involve gas piping, venting, condensate, hydronic piping, pumps, expansion components, controls, electrical work and changes to the existing distribution system. Those requirements should be identified before the final equipment and installation scope are established.

NTI offers more than one way to integrate domestic hot water.

Depending on the application, domestic hot water can be handled by a combi boiler or by a heat-only boiler paired with an appropriate indirect water heater or storage solution.

Selected NTI boiler models are available in combi configurations that provide hydronic space heating and domestic hot water from one appliance.

INDIRECT

Boiler + Indirect Water Heater

NTI’s current water-heating lineup includes indirect and storage options such as the S20W and Trin & Stor families. A separate indirect can be useful where storage and recovery characteristics better match the home’s hot-water demand.

NTI + HYDRONIC AIR HANDLERS

A boiler can also provide heat for a forced-air system.

In a properly designed application, an NTI boiler can supply heated water to a hydronic air-handler coil. The air handler then uses a blower and ductwork to distribute heat through the home.

WHOLE-SYSTEM DESIGN

Water-side performance and air-side performance both matter.

The boiler must provide the required water temperature and flow, while the air handler and duct system must provide the required airflow. Coil pressure drop, blower performance, return-air capacity, supply ductwork and static pressure remain important.

NTI BOILER MAINTENANCE

Preventative maintenance should include more than a visual check.

The appropriate scope depends on the NTI model and hydronic system. Boiler maintenance can include operation and controls, thermostat and zoning review, accessible heat-exchanger and combustion-area inspection, burners and ignition as applicable, gas pressure and combustion, pumps, expansion tank, relief and safety components, pressure and temperature, accessible piping, venting, condensate and glycol condition where relevant.

Hydronic systems vary substantially in equipment, zones and configuration, so DAVESDUCTS quotes boiler maintenance according to the boiler and required scope.

EXISTING NTI BOILERS

Older NTI equipment can still be serviced even when a product family has been discontinued.

NTI maintains documentation for discontinued equipment. If you have an older NTI boiler, send DAVESDUCTS the model and serial information along with photos and a description of the problem so we can determine the appropriate service approach.

OLDER MODELS

Do not assume an older model is still part of NTI’s current lineup.

NTI currently identifies several legacy families as discontinued, including older TFT, Tx and FTV equipment. Replacement recommendations should therefore be based on current products and the existing system rather than automatically specifying the old model again.

They are different NTI boiler platforms using different heat-exchanger designs. The FTVN uses a vertical fire-tube design, while the TRX uses a water-tube heat exchanger. The better choice depends on the specific system and project rather than the heat-exchanger type alone.

Does NTI make combi boilers?

Yes. Current NTI product families include combination models that provide hydronic space heating and domestic-hot-water production. The correct model should be selected around both loads.

Can an NTI boiler work with radiant floor heating?

Yes, when the hydronic system is properly designed. Radiant-floor applications require appropriate water temperatures, flow, controls and piping for the building and floor assembly.

Can an NTI boiler work with radiators or baseboards?

Yes. Existing radiators and baseboards can be served by a properly designed boiler system, but their required water temperature and output should be considered when selecting and configuring a replacement boiler.

Should I replace my NTI boiler because it has an error code?

Not automatically. A fault code is diagnostic information, not by itself a reason to replace the boiler. The equipment and relevant system conditions should be diagnosed first.
