MORE HUMIDITY IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER
The goal is controlled humidity — not maximum humidity.
During very cold weather, excessive indoor moisture can condense on windows and other cold building surfaces. The appropriate indoor setting depends on outdoor temperature, window performance, insulation, air leakage, ventilation and the building’s ability to manage moisture.
WATCH THE BUILDING
Condensation is a reason to reassess the humidity setting.
If water or persistent condensation is appearing on windows or other cold surfaces, simply increasing the humidistat is the wrong direction. The setting and the underlying building conditions should be reviewed.
Outdoor Temperature
As outdoor temperatures fall, cold interior surfaces may tolerate less indoor moisture before condensation develops.
Building Envelope
Window performance, insulation, thermal bridging and air leakage affect surface temperatures and condensation risk.

HUMIDIFIER TYPES
Bypass, fan-powered or steam?
Each approach adds moisture differently. Capacity, furnace runtime, duct layout, installation space and the amount of humidification required help determine which type makes sense.
BYPASS
Bypass Humidifiers
A bypass humidifier uses HVAC airflow and a bypass duct between the supply and return sides to move air through a water panel.
Often considered when: there is suitable duct space, an appropriate bypass path and the required humidification output can be achieved with HVAC operation.
FAN-POWERED
Powered Humidifiers
A fan-powered humidifier uses an internal fan to move air through the humidifier media rather than relying on a separate bypass duct.
Often considered when: the installation needs greater flexibility or more output than a suitable bypass arrangement can provide.
STEAM
Steam Humidifiers
A steam humidifier generates moisture and introduces steam into the duct airstream. It can provide higher output with less dependence on conventional furnace airflow through a water panel.
Often considered when: higher capacity, tighter control or greater independence from furnace burner runtime is required.

PROPER SIZING

Two homes of the same size can have very different humidification loads. Air leakage, construction, ventilation, ceiling height, occupancy, desired humidity and HVAC operation all influence how much moisture may be required.
Building Characteristics
A tighter home can retain moisture differently than a leakier building of the same floor area.
HVAC Runtime
Evaporative humidifiers depend on airflow and operating conditions, so equipment runtime can affect delivered output.

HEAT PUMPS & HYDRONIC AIR HANDLERS
What if your home doesn’t use a conventional gas furnace?
Whole-home humidification can require a different approach when the air-distribution system is served by a heat pump, hydronic air handler or another system with different supply-air temperatures and operating cycles. The humidifier should be selected and controlled around the actual equipment rather than assuming a conventional furnace installation.
SYSTEM-SPECIFIC DESIGN
Lower-temperature or variable-capacity HVAC operation can change the humidification strategy.

HUMIDIFIERS & VENTILATION
Your HRV or ERV can affect winter humidity.
Ventilation intentionally exchanges indoor and outdoor air. During cold weather, that can materially affect indoor moisture, so humidification should be considered together with the home’s ventilation strategy.
HRV
An HRV transfers sensible heat but does not intentionally transfer moisture back to the incoming airstream. During cold weather, ventilation can therefore contribute to lower indoor humidity.
ERV
An ERV transfers sensible heat and a portion of moisture between airstreams. Its effect on winter humidity differs from an HRV and depends on operating conditions.

What indoor humidity should I maintain in winter?
There is no single relative-humidity setting that is appropriate for every home and every outdoor temperature. Indoor humidity should be adjusted according to outdoor conditions and the building. If persistent condensation develops on windows or other cold surfaces, the humidity setting should be reassessed.
How do I know if my home needs a humidifier?
Start by measuring indoor relative humidity during the conditions when the home feels dry. Then consider outdoor temperature, ventilation, air leakage and whether low humidity is persistent enough to justify whole-home equipment.
What is the difference between a bypass and fan-powered humidifier?

When would I need a steam humidifier?

Does an HRV make my house drier in winter?
Cold-weather ventilation can reduce indoor humidity because moist indoor air is exhausted and replaced with typically drier outdoor air. The actual effect depends on ventilation rate, occupancy, outdoor conditions and whether the system is an HRV or ERV.
Does a whole-home humidifier require a drain?
