WHY HEPA?
High-efficiency filtration for fine airborne particles.
True HEPA filtration is designed to capture at least 99.97% of particles at the commonly referenced 0.3-micron test size from the air passing through the filter. Whole-home performance, however, depends on much more than the filter-media rating.
Pre-Filtration
Larger particles are captured before the primary HEPA media, helping protect the main filter.
HEPA Media
The primary filtration stage provides high-efficiency particulate capture from the airstream passing through it.
Carbon / VOC Media
Selected systems can incorporate additional carbon media intended to help address certain gases and odours. This is different from particulate filtration.
FILTER EFFICIENCY ≠ ROOM AIR QUALITY
A 99.97% HEPA rating does not mean 99.97% of every particle in your house disappears.
The filter can only capture particles from air that passes through it. System airflow, operating time, air changes, filter sealing, room-to-room circulation, outdoor infiltration and indoor particle sources all affect the result.
WHOLE-HOME HEPA
A dedicated HEPA system is not simply a restrictive furnace filter.
Whole-home HEPA equipment is typically installed as a dedicated filtration appliance connected to the HVAC duct system. The filtration unit has its own airflow characteristics and must be integrated so that it works with the existing mechanical system rather than creating an inappropriate restriction at the furnace or air handler.

AIR CHANGES PER HOUR
Why airflow matters when comparing HEPA systems.
Air changes per hour (ACH) is a useful way to relate filtration airflow to the volume of the space being served. In simple terms, a higher-capacity filtration system can pass the equivalent room volume through the filter more frequently — provided the installation and air-distribution system allow that airflow.
SIMPLE ACH RELATIONSHIP
Filtration airflow × 60 ÷ space volume = approximate air changes per hour.
This is a useful sizing reference, not a guarantee of uniform particle removal throughout a real building. Ceiling height, room separation, duct configuration, infiltration and particle sources all matter.

A larger published coverage area means fewer air changes per hour.

Pre & post particulate review
For applicable whole-home filtration projects, DAVESDUCTS can incorporate pre- and post-installation indoor-air-quality / particulate measurements to provide useful information about conditions before and after the filtration change.
Measurements are not a guarantee that a particular concentration will be maintained under every operating or occupancy condition.
PM2.5 & FINE PARTICULATE
Have a specific indoor particle target?
Some customers are not simply asking for “cleaner air.” They are trying to reduce measured PM2.5 or other airborne particulate. That should be treated as a filtration-design problem rather than solved by choosing equipment from a square-footage chart.
Establish a Baseline
Understand the existing particulate conditions and when/where measurements are being taken.
Review Airflow
Determine how much air the filtration system can realistically process and how that air will circulate through the building.
Control Sources
Cooking, renovation activity, outdoor pollution and infiltration can continue introducing particles while filtration is operating.
IMPORTANT
We won’t promise a PM2.5 number simply by installing a HEPA unit.
A properly designed filtration system can reduce airborne particulate, but indoor concentrations continuously respond to outdoor air, infiltration, occupant activity and particle-generating sources inside the building.

MULTIPLE HVAC SYSTEMS
Two furnaces may need a different filtration strategy than one.
Large and multi-zone homes often have separate HVAC systems serving different floors or areas. One HEPA unit connected to one duct system does not automatically provide equivalent filtration to spaces served by another independent system.

SPECIALIZED ENVIRONMENTS

FILTER MAINTENANCE
HEPA systems need service after installation.
As particulate accumulates, airflow through filtration media can decrease. Pre-filters, HEPA media and optional carbon/VOC media have different service requirements and should be maintained according to the equipment manufacturer.

Protects the primary HEPA media from larger particles and generally requires more frequent attention.
HEPA Media
Replaceable filtration media should be changed when required rather than washed unless specifically designed otherwise.
Carbon / VOC Media
Gas-phase media has finite capacity and should be replaced based on the product, conditions and manufacturer recommendations.

FILTRATION IS ONLY ONE PART OF IAQ
HEPA does an important job — but it doesn’t do every job.
HEPA filtration addresses airborne particulate passing through the filter. It does not replace outdoor-air ventilation, moisture control, combustion safety, source control, duct repair or HVAC maintenance.

Common questions about whole-home and portable HEPA systems.
Does DAVESDUCTS install whole-home HEPA filtration?
Yes. DAVESDUCTS designs, supplies and installs whole-home HEPA filtration and can evaluate the HVAC system, ductwork, airflow and available installation space before determining the appropriate configuration.
What does “true HEPA” mean?
HEPA filtration is commonly rated to capture at least 99.97% of particles at the 0.3-micron test size from air passing through the filter. Proper sealing is important because bypass air does not pass through the HEPA media.
Does HEPA filtration remove PM2.5?
HEPA filtration captures particles within the PM2.5 size range from the air passing through the filter. The amount of PM2.5 reduction throughout a building also depends on filtration airflow, operating time, sources, infiltration and air distribution.
Can HEPA filtration capture particles smaller than 0.3 microns?
Yes. The 0.3-micron rating is not a minimum particle size. HEPA media can capture particles both larger and smaller than that test size through several filtration mechanisms. Whole-space performance still depends on airflow and system design.
Is a whole-home HEPA system the same as a furnace filter?
No. A dedicated whole-home HEPA system generally operates as a separate filtration appliance connected to the duct system rather than placing highly restrictive HEPA media directly into a conventional furnace filter rack.
What does ACH mean?
ACH means air changes per hour. For filtration, it is a useful approximation of how many times the volume of air in a defined space could pass through the filtration system each hour.
Should I buy the Whisper 350 or Whisper 675?
The correct choice depends on the space, desired filtration airflow, HVAC configuration, ductwork and filtration objective. A larger published square-foot rating does not necessarily mean the smaller unit is ideal for every home below that size.
Can one HEPA system filter a house with two furnaces?
Not necessarily. Separate HVAC systems generally serve separate duct systems or zones. DAVESDUCTS can determine whether multiple filtration units, portable filtration or another configuration is appropriate.
Can DAVESDUCTS measure PM2.5 before and after installation?
For applicable projects, particulate measurements can be incorporated to establish a baseline and provide post-installation information. Results should be interpreted in the context of outdoor conditions, indoor sources and how the building is being used.
Does a HEPA filter remove VOCs?
HEPA media is designed for particulate filtration. Selected systems can use separate activated-carbon or other gas-phase media intended to help address certain gases and odours.
Should I choose whole-home or portable HEPA filtration?
Whole-home filtration is generally appropriate when filtration throughout a suitable ducted home is desired. Portable equipment can be effective when the objective is concentrated in a bedroom, office, apartment or other selected space.
Does HEPA filtration replace air duct cleaning?
No. HEPA filtration captures airborne particulate passing through the filtration equipment. Air duct cleaning addresses eligible accumulated debris already inside the HVAC system and ductwork.
