BEHIND THE DRYER
A few inches of space can make a major difference.
The appliance connection is one of the most common dryer-exhaust trouble spots. Pushing a dryer tightly against the wall can crush or kink the transition duct, create a sharp bend or pull the connection apart.
What we look for
- Crushed or kinked transition duct.
- Loose or disconnected joints.
- Excessive material behind the appliance.
- Sharp bends immediately at the dryer outlet.
- Insufficient clearance to maintain the connection.
Possible corrections
Depending on the available space and existing exhaust configuration, DAVESDUCTS can evaluate a shorter connection, suitable rigid or low-profile components, improved alignment or another serviceable arrangement that reduces the likelihood of crushing or disconnection.
LONG & COMPLEX EXHAUST RUNS
There is no responsible one-number rule for every dryer exhaust.
The acceptable exhaust configuration depends on the dryer manufacturer’s instructions, duct diameter and material, fittings, equivalent length, routing and applicable requirements. Elbows add resistance, so the measured straight-line distance alone does not tell the whole story.
Long Horizontal Runs
Long concealed runs can create more resistance and may be more difficult to inspect and clean than a short direct exhaust.
Multiple Elbows
Every change in direction affects the exhaust path and creates another location where lint can accumulate.
Vertical Runs
Routes through upper floors, ceilings and attics require particular attention to access, routing, termination and moisture.
IMPORTANT
We do not automatically prescribe a booster fan or secondary lint trap because a vent exceeds one arbitrary distance.
The complete dryer exhaust should be evaluated first. The appliance manufacturer’s requirements and the actual exhaust configuration should guide the repair strategy.
BOOSTER FANS
A dryer booster fan is a design solution — not a shortcut around a bad exhaust.
Before adding a booster fan, DAVESDUCTS evaluates whether the underlying problem is lint accumulation, damaged ductwork, excessive resistance, poor routing or another deficiency. Adding a fan to a defective exhaust does not correct the defective exhaust.

SECONDARY LINT TRAPS
A secondary lint trap may help some systems — but it also becomes a maintenance point.
A secondary lint trap should not be added automatically to every long dryer exhaust. Where one is appropriate for the equipment and system design, it needs to remain readily accessible and must be cleaned frequently so the lint trap itself does not become a restriction.
ACCESSIBILITY MATTERS
If the homeowner cannot easily reach and clean it, it is not a practical maintenance solution.

ATTICS & CONDENSATION
Warm dryer exhaust passing through a cold space needs special attention.
Dryer exhaust carries heat and moisture. When that exhaust travels through a cold attic or another unconditioned space, poor routing, restrictions or inadequate protection can contribute to condensation inside the exhaust system.

Why it matters
Moisture can contribute to corrosion, staining and damage to surrounding finishes. Damp interior surfaces can also cause lint to adhere more readily inside the exhaust path, making the underlying airflow problem worse.

The dryer has to discharge properly outdoors.
